Encounters

I remember each day through emotion. As I looked back on those memories, I began to think not only about what I had felt, but also about where I had been standing, what the people around me had been looking at, and how we had shared the same place. These questions led me to look beyond my own feelings and toward the people around me and the places we occupied together. Looking again at a familiar day, experiencing a place for the first time, and noticing strangers who share the same time and space are all forms of encounter. By recording myself, others, and the places we inhabit together, I begin to see the days I have lived through in a new way. In parks, squares, streets, stations, and tourist sites, people gather for different reasons. They walk, wait, look, linger, and eventually disperse in their own directions. The movements of people with no prior connection overlap by chance and, together with the structure of the place, briefly form a single scene. In that moment, strangers who otherwise have no relationship become temporarily connected within the same frame, producing unexpected rhythms and narratives. I imagine where people might gather and what kinds of scenes might unfold as I search for these physical points of contact. Yet the scenes I actually encounter always exist somewhere between expectation and chance. By recording these moments, I look again at familiar places, experience unfamiliar spaces, and encounter anew the present day unfolding around me.
